DJI joins Reno’s downtown urban air mobility trial programme

DJI has joined the programme to test urban air mobility operations in the downtown area of Reno, Nevada. A key objective of the research will be to gauge public opinion on drone operations in the city.

Reno is hosting the top three most important Department of Transportation  (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) drone tests in the USA in 2019, according to the Nevada Institute for Autonomous Systems (NAIS). “The City of Reno will soon advance Urban Air Mobility (UAM) like no other city in the U.S. and its participation with the NIAS, which runs the State of Nevada FAA-designated UAS Test Site and is a key Nevada entity toward developing safe urban drone operations.

“DJI, the world’s largest drone manufacturer is donating two important pieces of equipment to the effort, allowing program managers to use advanced analytic capability to monitor activity in the Nevada airspace… The AeroScope remote identification system can monitor all DJI drones in a designated area, displaying their locations, their pilots’ locations and their serial numbers on a map, helping improve airspace safety.

“Community awareness toward integration of drones to make people’s lives easier is a top priority for Reno and through Reno’s participation in the DOT’s UAS Integration Pilot Program (IPP), NASA’s UAS Traffic Management (UTM) TCL 4, and the FAA’s UTM Pilot Program (UPP) are important milestones toward this community awareness.

“This is a truly exciting time for the City of Reno and all of our UAS partners,” Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said. “We are thrilled that international drone manufacturing company DJI has joined this expansive collaboration to help us test the next evolution of this technology. We urge our Reno area residents to visit Reno.gov/UAS to learn more and continue to offer input on our UAS programs.”

“DJI is pleased to work with the City of Reno and the State of Nevada UAS Test Site/NIAS on their groundbreaking work to determine how society can reap the benefits of drone technology while addressing the challenges of integrating drones into the airspace,” said DJI Public Policy Manager David Hansell. “….Our DJI AeroScope receiver can identify and monitor every DJI drone within radio range, allowing the Test Site to manage complex drone operations precisely, reliably and safely. The City of Reno and the State of Nevada UAS Test Site/NIAS are developing the systems of the drone-enabled future, and DJI is happy to help play a part in making it possible.”

In 2013, the FAA selected Nevada as one of six designated UAS test site operators. The FAA created the test sites to encourage the integration of drones into air traffic systems.  NIAS is responsible for the management of the FAA-designated Nevada UAS Test Site and is one of two FAA-designated UAS Test Sites in the country to lead the NASA UTM TCL 4 and one of three to lead the FAA’s UAS Traffic Management Pilot Program (UPP).
