A major EU-project led by Southern Denmark University (SDU) is to develop an automatic drone system to monitor bridges, railroads and other critical infrastructure.
The drones will fly in swarms, photograph and analyse the constructions, harvest energy from power cables, and notify if repairs are needed. This comprehensive project named Drones4Safety has revived a grant of DKK26 million through the EU’s Horizon 2020 program.
Associate Professor Emad Samuel Malki Ebeid, the project leader from SDUs Drone Centre, said, “It is about increasing the safety of transport. Many will remember pictures from the collapse of a highway bridge in Genoa. This is something we want to prevent with the project.”
The consortium consists of nine partners including Syddansk and Aarhus Universities, Southern Denmark University, Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, EUCENTRE and Deep Blue SRL.
