The Spanish Cluster of Innovative Air Mobility (SIAM) has published a white paper on vertiports to “define the bases for the development of the land-based infrastructures that will support Innovative Air Mobility (IAM), of which Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and Regional Air Mobility (RAM) are a constituent part.”
The main objectives of this Whitepaper are
- Define the framework for the development of the vertiports This document is intended to provide an overview of the design, construction and operation of vertiports, taking into account both technological challenges and regulatory requirements. To this end, the adaptation of these infrastructures to the specific characteristics of VCAs and their integration into the urban and rural environment will also have to be addressed.
- Encouraging public-private partnerships The development of vertiports implies close collaboration between the various actors in the air mobility ecosystem, including both public administrations and industry. This Whitepaper aims to align the interests of all parties involved, promoting synergies and facilitating the creation of sustainable business models for the operation of these infrastructures.
- Establish an adapted regulatory framework A key objective is to provide recommendations to guide the creation of a regulatory framework to enable the certification and operation of vertiports in Spain and Europe. It must be flexible enough to adapt to the particular requirements of VCAs and the characteristics of urban and rural environments, ensuring safety and sustainability.
- Promoting social acceptance The implementation of vertiports will only be feasible if the acceptance of society is achieved. The Whitepaper addresses societal concerns, such as noise, privacy, visual impact and sustainability, and proposes solutions to integrate these infrastructures harmoniously into local communities, minimising perceived negative effects.
- Driving innovation and sustainability The vertiports must become benchmarks for technological innovation and sustainability. Therefore, this document aims to promote the use of renewable energies and the application of advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to optimise operations and reduce environmental impact, positioning Spain and Europe as a benchmark in sustainable air mobility.
- Create a roadmap for implementation Finally, one of the main objectives is to establish a clear and feasible roadmap for the implementation of vertiports in Spain and Europe. This roadmap should include timelines, critical stages of development and specific actions to ensure successful deployment in the short and medium term.
